Peter DeakinAnita Michaels / Adams has also agreed to buy a textbook from me with an Australia Post Money order via Africa. Initially contact was made by her 'friend' Michael from textbookexchange. I became suspicious when her name and email changed a couple of times. Only info she has is my name and address. Now using sakeoflove75@yahoo.com and loftbell123@gmail.com Have many contacts with her and she maybe is building rappore and will now escalate scam and request bank/paypal details to pay for postage? Thanks

K9I received an email(loftbell123@gmail.com) from Anita on 13th November 2010, requesting to purchase a textbook from textbookexchange.com

She is a scammer and not a very good one. She says she is at the World Youth Forum in Nigeria and desperately needs
a law textbook (butterworths questions and answers - legal problem-solving exercises) that I am selling.
She promised an overpayment by cheque and requested the seller to refund the balance to her in a Western Union account.

The story doesn't add up. She mentioned that she needed the textbook urgently, assuming for study purposes. Since the uni exam period only started yesterday (15 November 2010), how can she be attending some Youth Forum in Nigeria at the moment?!?!?!

In addition, she mentioned that she is attending the World Youth Forum in Nigeria at the moment ... surprise, surprise, a search on the internet revealed no such convention!

It was transparent from her instructions that she intended to send a fake cheque that would bounce while the seller deposited the balance to her account.

What a stupid scammer ...

IvyHey guys ...

What happened to those that have sent that details to her. I gave her my name, address, and BSB bank details. Can someone please get back to me? I am really afraid.

Yes, same textbook case. :(

I'd much appreciate any suggestions. Do I need to change my bank details, coz obviously I can't move from my current address. :(

cynthiaSame story as above. After a month of continuous emails from her and no sight of a cheque. I finally googled her, although i had suspicions earlier. I supplied her with the above details.. same email as above. I don't get the scam though, what could she possibly gain from it? stupid scammer indeed. I'm officially adding her to my junk mail.

K9After my previous posting on this website, I emailed Anita Adams to tell her that the deal is off.

But today, I receive another email from her, telling me that she has already posted the money order to me. She is persistent with her attempt to scam.

I've copied and pasted her email in the passage below ...

"Hello Friend

I am so sorry for the delay
Thanks for the patience..

I just got the Australian post order sent to you on Friday
I was told that it will take a maximum of 10 working days to get to you.....
Kindly make sure the book is clean and untouched..

Please reply back on this email address or the previous email address immediately you receive the post order so we can this concluded with and also keep in touch..

Thanks for the patience...
Keep in touch and let me know soonest..

Please respond.

K9I received my Australia Post Money Order from Anita Adams today (29 November).

The stamps on the envelop indicate that the money order was sent from the Republique du Benin (i.e., West Africa), on 18 November 2010

The money order was sent in an envelop with no sender details (i.e., name and return address).... nor were the sender's details (i.e., name, account number) completed at the back of the actual money order slip.

The front of the money order slip records the following:

1) the amount of $600 - a gross overpayment since the advertised selling price of my book is only $58;

2) the money order's 10-digit reference number: 5244350689 (top right corner);

3) a rubber stamped mark for place and date of issue - Canning Vale South, WA 6155, 23 November 2010;

4) a message reading: "This text is printed in heat sensitive ink to authenticate. Rub this message and the words will disappear then reappear" ...

... of course, rubbing the print did not make the message disappear as claimed on the money order.

Finally, when I checked the authenticity of the money order by calling phone: 1300 362 030, Australia Post indicated that it was not a valid money order.

Most astounding is the fact that these scammer are so stupid that they can't even get the date right on the money order slip ... it is not logically possible for the date of issue of the money order (22 Nov 2010) to be LATER than the post office stamp on the sealed envelop already containing the money order itself (10 Nov 2010)!!!

Not the sharpest tool in the toolbox, eh?

I recieved 2 envelopes yesterday for a total of $1000 from Du Benin. the MO's were stamped Canning Vale and Meriville (i think). Today i got email saying a shipper has been contacted and to send balance via weston union to shipper, but no details. I have handed them to australia post. Have any of you been to police? JayneGrrrr I too have encountered this witch.

Same story as both Cynthia and Ivy have shared.

I phoned my bank to let them know the information I had sent "her" and they said that I shouldn't have any problems.

I encountered her from the textbook exchange site. Such a shame, it puts a damper on using such sites.

Without even mentioning much my mum KNEW that "anita" was a scammer...I should have listened to Mum!!

Cheers all! I am glad that sites like this are around!

K9Like Sue, I have notified ACCC/ScamWatch about the Anita Adams/textbook-exchange scam.

In addition, I informed textbook exchange about the scam. The supervisor at textbook exchange said she has deactivated Anita Adams account and will monitor the situation closely.

I've been getting more emails from Anita Adams prompting a reply, but I've just ignored them.

Comment from: lovellstudios [Member] Email
lovellstudiosHi Vali & James!

Paypal is awesome! Have them send you their payment by paypal BUT MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET THE MONEY IN YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT!!!

They will send you an email that looks like it is from Paypal - forward that to spoof@paypal.com don't believe that the money will come until you log into your paypal account and it is in your account.

Do not click on any links they send you cause they can have you log into something that looks like paypal but isn't paypal. Then they have your passwords...

I never turn down money! But make it a personal & business policy to never give money to anyone that wants to buy something from you, no matter how much they give you in advance! You wouldn't be allowed to do that at a regular store...

Best wishes!

lovellstudiosIf you gave "Anita" your bank account number or sent "Anita" money - contact your bank and try to stop payment or change your bank account number fast! - if you sent money by Western Union - you might try contacting Western Union and let them know about the scam. They probably can't help you. You might want to report this to the police in the area where you sent your money, they might be interested - but it probably will not help you.

Hi Visitor,

From what you said you gave him you should be fine... it doesn't hurt for them to have you paypal email - all they can do is request that you pay them but the scammers never actually send you money through the "real" paypal system. They send you emails that look convincing but when you log into you paypal account there is no money or any corresponding transaction to support their story that paypal has held your funds.

Don't fall for it - never send anyone money to buy your stuff, never give your bank account or credit/debit card to anyone to buy your stuff. That is just plain backwards.

I give everyone our paypal email address, because I want everyone to send us money if they want to, but we never send our money to people to buy our stuff. That's their scam....

Paypal is really safe and paypal keeps your bank accounts credit cards safe! That is why paypal is such a great service - but do not fall for their fake paypal emails. Real paypal payments all can be seen when you log into your paypal account, even when there maybe a hold on a transaction you see it in your account history. If it is not there - it is a scam!

Let me know if you have other questions or have more info to help ohers - we will post it on the wall of shame!

Thanks!

Don't send any money to Western Union even if you get an email from paypal.com thanking you. The bogus email sent to you is from a bogus link to a site that looks like paypal. (Paypal uses paypal.co.uk)

Thank you so much to this site and other contributors. I too was alerted by the poor English in a so-called email from Paypal. Very annoying - the above emailer sent the following message: "do you still have it available for sale and i would like to know the present condition.."

Then: Thanks for the response.. I have a pickup agent that will come and pick it after i have made the payments.....

do you still have it available for sale and i would like to know the present condition..

Then: "Hello,

I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up,I got an email from my agent..i taught i included that in my previous email.he said he won't come and pick up unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time ,and my pick up agent head quarters and all commission payments made for pick up, from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters and the only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and i tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't bring along, and there is no post office(there is usually a western union section in have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the £200.00GBP they charged to pick it up and take it my home(1st class treatment), to the payments i will send through PayPal. After i have made the payments and it has been confirmed by PayPal, i will need you to help me send the £200.00GBP to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a western union office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most western union or online at www.westernunion.com .

I will make total payment of £550.00GBP for the Payment, £300.00GBP for the Item, £200.00GBP for the Pick-Up fee and £50.00GBP for Western Union Charges.

Regards"

I've copied all the messages so that if you get a similar one you will know it's a scam. Brilliant site, you helped me make the right decision!

All of the above responded to my email listing (as below) I've also put all the correspondence in to make it easier for others who are trying to Google their names, etc. Took me a few attempts to find this website.

I don't understand how people can do this - does contacting the police help? I would really like to be able to do more to stop these people. It is so poorly done, I can't believe they get away with it!!

I clicked on the link to the website, just out of curiousity - what should I do now? I feel so silly :(

Thanks for the prompt response..Can i pay you $34,500 for it? I'll be happy if you can accept my offer and am ready to buy it now for birthday gift for brother in-law and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the car to be a surprise for brother in-law so i wont let him know anything about the car until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with the car. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the car and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the car up after i have made the payments...

Thanks.

Thank you for posting all that scammer info. You just saved me from Donald J. Same email different story, he claimed to be in the military and wanted (truck) for son as surprise. Said he would pay with paypal and have a courier pick up the truck. A simple search for his email adress and sure enough you verified my skepticism.

Thanks again...

Hey, please post this!

If you leave your email on your eBay listing, you will receive offers that seem too good to be true - they are!

Their msg says:

Hey Mate,

I saw your ads on eBay, whats the present condition of your item? Can I see the pictures? Have you gotten a buyer?? I am interested in buying and I can offer you 2000AUD if it's in a good condition, what do you
think? Is that ok by you? What payment option do you prefer? Kindly get back to me to negotiate..

Regards

I have received this same email from different adresses.. after you reply once, they will come back with a massive email explaining that they're a marine engineer out on a boat or something and something about a check and trevor moving company.. lame lame lame..

I would suggest not leaving your email on the listings.. if people want to contact you they can via eBay.

Dig these scamming suckers:

neill19877@gmail.com, ghekkemann@gmail.com, kanmennlon@gmail.com, paul.rowan2500@gmail.com < at it again!

All of these were in one day, although I felt pretty special, there was a lack of real emotion and tone behind their words..

If you want to make them honest, suggest that they buy it off eBay like everyone else or not at all!

Thanks! Lovell Studios, you guys came up when I facebook searched one their emails ;)

ChloeHi there - I have recently listed a fridge on Gumtree.com.au and have been sent a few dodgy sms's from OS numbers asking me to email them with more information about the fridge... I thought it was dodgy because all of the information I could possibly supply was already written in the ad!
So I googled their email addresses and came across this site! Good to see the community looking out for each other...

KathyRE: Matt Johnson, Phone 213-342-5246, Email johnsonx122@gmail.com

Matt Johnson texted my husband and asked if "the car is still for sale", a dune buggy advertised 2 months ago on Craigslist. He replied to the email address Matt left that it was.

Matt immediately replied:
"Thanks for the mail...I will appreciate more pictures..I am ready to buy it now for my son as a surprise promise gift,And due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it.i would be glad to pay for it as soon as possible though i will not be available to come for an inspection due to my tight schedule.Kindly get back to me with the following questions below:

1) What is the condition?
2) Are you the Owner?
3) Pick up Location?
4) Your Registered PayPal Name and Registered PayPal Email Address For Me To Proceed With The Payment?

I would be glad to make the payment immediately through PayPal so kindly get back to me with your Registered PayPal Name and Registered PayPal Email For Me To Proceed With The Payment. You need not to worry yourself about title transfer and shipment,i will instruct the shipping company to handle that therefore in order to complete the transaction do get back to me with your Registered PayPal Name and Registered PayPal Email Address and total cost so that I can make the payment asap. I will be waiting for your reply!
Thanks and God bless!!!"

Didn't pass the smell test, even before I read the so un-PC "God Bless"! Buyers make a lowball offer for unsold goods, especially non-essential recreational. This guy never mentioned the original asking price or made an offer, insinuating money is no object to encourage an inflated price and bigger payout for himself!

Pick-up location? Ummm, it was advertised on San Diego Craigslist and you dialed a San Diego area code.

Matt, who and where are you? A reverse phone search shows LA, which suggests you are only 100 miles away. Rather premature to arrange for shipping when personal contact and vehicle inspection can be easily arranged. A call back was answered with a sketchy recorded message that did not identify a person or business.

Didn't ask the right questions about street legality, registration quirks, and specs for this one-of-a-kind vehicle in a hasty sight-unseen big ticket purchase. Focused too much on the money exchange.

I told my husband he's a scammer, but he's convinced you can't fool PayPal. I wanted to check this guy out before he replied, Googled his email address, and found your site. Thank you and the poster who had a similar encounter with Matt Johnson.

Coincidently, I'm reporting another Internet scam and my bullshit radar is on high alert!

lovellstudiosHi Kathy,

We're so happy that you didn't fall for it!

Like your husband said, Paypal is your friend, if you use it right. You will always get correspondence directly in your Paypal account and clearly see those transactions on your main Paypal page when any transaction occurs.

Even though someone sends you a message saying Paypal is holding money - check your Paypal account to verify before believing anyone.

Also, Paypal has a great service you can forward your suspect paypal emails to spoof@paypal.com for verification. Paypal has always responded within a couple hours.

Thanks for posting your experiences! It really helps!!
